Video editing for mac os x 10.6.8

Whenever I try to download it on the Apple store I’m met with ‘iMovie can’t be installed on Macintosh HD because macOS version 10.13.6 or later is required.’ I’m on MacOs Sierra 10.12.6. Is my Macbook too old or something? Can someone please help me out with what I should do? I would really appreciate it! I tried to download Mountain Lion 10.8.2 (the only one I saw available on the app site) it downloaded but told me I needed 10.8! *sigh* I really just want to pay my fifteen bucks for iMovie. When I go to search for software updates on my computer it tells me that everything is up to date. I want to download iMovie but the app store is teling me that I need at least 10.8 to do it.
